Even though the university has the scarcity of infrastructures and equipments, still the university produces competitive graduates. We have limited numbers of computer in our laboratory, books and resources in the library and rooms but all this did not hinder our journey of studying diligently. There are many ways to support our needs. Like limited resources, as a student and IT student in this university we are engaged to the world of technology. Trough internet we can find what we need to supply our knowledge. These are to enable us to strive hard in our study to become competitive in our works. It also teaches it have nurtured our personality, physically, mentally, morally, socially and many more for our education.

No matter how the university trained us to be globally competitive in the world works and whatever job we want in the future, the true training starts from ourselves. As a student we must be responsible on the things we do that lead us to learn and earn grater productivity while we reap the goal of our destiny.

About Green Computing

Green computing, the study and practice
of efficient and eco-friendly computing resources, is now under the attention of not only environmental organizations, but also businesses from other industries. In recent years, companies in the computer industry have come to realize that going green is in their best interest, both in terms of public relations and reduced costs. http://thefutureofthings.com/articles/1003/green-computing.html

1.)http://ecenter.colorado.edu/energy/projects/green_computing.html

According to this site, the growing use of computers on campus has caused a dramatic increase in energy consumption, putting negative pressure on CU’s budget and the environment. Each year more and more computers are purchased and put to use, but it’s not just the number of computers that is driving energy consumption upward. The way that we use computers also adds to the increasing energy burden.
Research reveals that most personal desktop computers are not being used the majority of the time they are running and many personal computers nationwide are needlessly left on continuously. Every time we leave computers or lights on we waste electricity. Burning fossil fuels generates most of our electricity and it also emits pollutants, sulfur, and carbon dioxide into the air. These emissions can cause respiratory disease, smog, acid rain and global climate change. The most basic energy conservation strategies for any type of equipment are the following:
  • Turn off your computer and/or peripherals when they are not in use. Turning on and off will not harm the equipment.
  • Don’t run computers continuously unless they are in use continuously.
  • Turn off at night and on weekends
  • Look for ways to reduce the amount of time your computer is on without adversely affecting your productivity.
2.) http://www.beloit.edu/isr/greencomputing.php

According to this site, everyday energy is wasted by computers and monitors that are left on when not in use. By simply putting the hard drive and monitor to sleep after a short period of inactivity, huge energy savings can be realized. The computer should wake up with a quick click of the mouse or by pressing a key on the keyboard. In some cases, you will need to press the power button briefly to wake the computer up. Also, be sure to shut down your computer before leaving for the day and over weekends. Use this handy calculator to get an idea of how much energy and money can be saved.

3.) http://www.uoregon.edu/~recycle/Conservation_computing_text.htm

According to this site, in order to make sure the computer you buy is environmentally friendly, ask if the manufacturer has adopted these Silicon Principles, and ask about what steps have been taken to implement them. . The Silicon Principles include:
  • Efforts at reducing the use of toxic chemicals
  • the development of educational and safety programs
  • Cooperation with local communities
  • ensuring that workers aren't displaced by technological or economic shifts
  • Control of technological innovation by civil Can, not military, actors
  • equiring subcontractors and suppliers obey the same policies as large corporations, including international suppliers
  • establishing a life-cycle approach to all computer manufacturing (which means that the factory is responsible for ultimate disposal of the computer), to internalize costs and guarantee safe disposal
All these sites tell us the growing use of computers exploding around the world. The university can adopt this concept in many ways. First, turn off your computer when not being used, and only turn on printers and other peripherals when you need them. Buy Energy Star compliant equipment, and ask if the manufacturer follows the Silicon Valley Principles in dealing with toxic chemicals. Second, enhanced work environments such as campus computer lab space and office work space with reduced noise pollution and eye strain from traditional CRTs. Third, a reduction in all operating costs by reducing supplies such as toner, ink and paper. Fourth, upgrade the computer rather than throwing it away and buying a new one. Lastly, give your old computers to charity, or have a recycling service deal with your really archaic computers. Through this the university uses computers as a tool to protect the environment. But all this things start from our self to be more responsible in what we are doing if it is good or bad to the environment.

About COMDAP

THE POWER OF INTERDEPENDENCE COMDDAP is an association of the country's top information technolgy businesses. Its primary objective is to promote the sustainable development of the of the country's information technology industry through voluntary collaboration of its member companies. It is the goal of COMDDAP to be able to provide its members general views and updates from different sectors - private and government, and highly regarded individuals to further uplift the morale and knowledge of its organization.

The vision of promoting and elevating the standards of Information technology (IT) in the Philippines fueled a group of prominent computer companies to form the Computer Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines or COMDDAP. Its initial member-companies represent the world's leading makers and providers of computer products, solutions and peripherals.

In 1997, the manufacturing sector - represented by industry leaders Hewlett Packard, Epson and Compaq, among others - was integrated into the COMDDAP membership, making the association a more diverse representation of the IT sector and thus the new name, COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS, DISTRIBUTORS AND DEALERS ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES.

Learning and Reflection

Before we attend the COMDDAP 2009 on July 2, 2009 at the Apo View Hotel we ensure that we already registered the 1:00-5:00 pm sessions. We arrived to the Apo View Hotel at exactly 12:30pm five minutes before the time so that we can prepare our self. We gather ourselves outside in the hotel and we go as a group. First thing we do we get a student sticker for us to recognize. As we enter the hotel's grand ballroom attaching our student stickers, the room were filled with the booths of different companies are there participating the events. We turn around the hotel's grand ballroom getting some flyers and promotion prints from the different companies. Some of our classmates take some picture and exploring the world of technology through this event. Some of the companies join in the event are well-known in terms of technological advancement. Some of well known companies are hp invent, red fox, Smart Bro, neo, dell, GH depot and etc. After these we proceed to the session hall of Apo View Hotel.

Before entering to the session hall, we find our name and sign in to ensure if we are registered to that session. Some of the participants are student from the University of Southeastern Philippines. The first exhibitor of the nexus group is the Jupiter Systems Inc. and the ERIC (Enterprise Resource Information and Control) DMS. The speaker of this company is Mr. Celmer Santos. He talk about a brief history of there company. Jupiter Systems Inc. (JSI) is a Philippine-based IT company dedicated to delivering business solutions for medium to large companies globally. JSI is one of the most experienced software houses in the Philippines and was one of the pioneers of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in the country. The company has been delivering business solutions for the past 25 years. This is a management for financial, personnel, distribution and manufacturing for auto dealerships. There unique HR functionalities for Hong Kong Airport Services (HAS).Extended employee master files containing accident/insurance information, reporting, recording of disability/injuries and specialized maintenance and tracking for leaves, loans, and other non-monetary benefits. This company provides solution for auto dealerships. After that, some of the participants of that event asked question regarding in there company and the services they offered.

After the ERIC DMS, we proceed to the next session which is HP invent Think Big, Go Thin: HP Thin Client. The speaker of this company is Mr. Leonard Zapa. Everybody we very excited because they where be giving tokens such as T-shirts, optical mouse and USB flash disks. The exhibitor introduce there newest product the Thin Client. For the word itself “thin” it is small object. Thin clients are computing devices that function as an access device on a network. These solid-state devices connect over a network to a server where the bulk of the processing takes place. Thin clients have no hard drive, allowing for more secure storage of data and applications on the server. In fact, keystrokes, mouse events and screen images are all that is sent between the client and server. This makes the device much more secure than a standard desktop or notebook computer. With no hard drive, fan or other moving parts, thin clients have a much longer lifespan than standard computers and use significantly less power. Lower maintenance costs are another benefit as software application updates, virus scanning and patches can be executed on the server. Deployment costs are also reduced as thin clients can be remotely configured and do not need to be set up individually. Break-fix simply requires replacing the thin client. Thin clients are ideal solution for today's healthcare, industrial, retail, financial and education industries offering a number of benefits to your business. The benefits of these are enhanced security, easier manageability, high reliability, increased energy efficiency and lower total cost of ownership. HP thin client can also be a desktop replacement costs, network security, data access to mobile or remote workers, supporting application software on diverse hardware, or ensuring your data remains accessible and secure. The first word comes in my mouth when I heard this device is “It’s amazing”. After that the most awaited part of all participant the question and answers portion. Most who got the correct answer is from the USEP and they get the tokensBoth of these companies are member of nexus group. Nexus maintains a strong network of IT solutions providers culled carefully from a genuine passion to provide solutions that offer genuine business advantage. The company has never been afraid to actively push new products. A local pioneer in solutions-based reselling, Nexus carried Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft back when they were new players in the server market. It approaches the business today with the same bravado. . Most of the exhibitor came from different parts of the Philippines gather in this spectacular event.

We finished the two consecutive sessions with the learning’s and concept about the two companies. Some of our classmate attended the last session but I and my other classmate go to the exhibit area to explore more advance technology. Being an Information Technology Student we must be updated to what is happening in terms of technology improvements. Through this event we experience the wonder of technology.

Views and Opinion regarding Automated Election

Nowadays corporation take the advantage of technological advancements to help improve the functionality and security of data being processed inside the company. Various system of file keeping and storing of information are being used as tools for corporate development and progress. Most organizations find the usual system of manual handling of data time-consuming and more prone to error and irregularities. Thus, database systems are developed to electronically keep and manage data being processed by the company. This provides the company’s potential for producing more accurate and timely information for operating, controlling, and planning purposes. The performance of every employee greatly affects the output quality of work.

Like in the company that needs technological advancements to help improve the functionality and security of data being processed and its affects the output quality of work. Our country also needs technological advancements to ensure security towards a clean and honest election.

When we talk about automated first come into our main is from the word itself “automated” it is to convert a process or workplace to automation, or utilize the techniques of automation. It is the use of technology that governs the people to do their task and greatly affects the output quality of work like in the company because automated is fast and gives accurate data than manual election. Manual election takes time and months to declare a winner but in case of automated it takes hours to declare a winner and it save time and effort.

Automated Election

In this matter the Total Information Management Corp.'s (TIM) joint venture with Smartmatic to supply Commission on Elections (COMELEC) an automated machines to use these coming 2010 Philippine Elections.

The Smartmatic Auditable Election System (SAES) is a fully-automated, electronic voting system that is completely secure, reliable and auditable. The powerful combination of robust hardware, secure software and highly qualified personnel enables the SAES system to guarantee elections that voters can trust, in any part of the world. From its voting machines that feature a variety of vote input devices, customizable interfaces and printed voter receipts, to its secure data transmission networks, high-end tallying servers, immediate results tabulation and fully auditable paper trail, the SAES technological platform is the only end-to–end system available that ensures democracy rules, cost effectively.

Benefits of Automated Election

1.) Security. This system is created by combining internationally recognized and standard-based security algorithms. The voters won’t have to worry about election tampering.
2.) Immediacy. Not only do SAES voting machines allow voters to cast their choice more quickly, they allow the results to be known just minutes after the last polling place has closed.
3.) Veracity. Smartmatic was the first company in the world to include printed receipts so every voter can verify that their on screen selections were recorded accurately. This not only establishes an auditable paper trail, but invites public trust and establishes the credibility of the election.
4.) Economy. The digital voting process reduces the cost of holding an election because it requires greatly reduced human and economic resources. In addition, a thousand tons of paper can be saved because the need to print anything is eliminated almost entirely!
5.) Auditing. A prerequisite of Smartmatic’s engagement is that a series of audits are undertaken before, during and after the election. SAES has been designed to make this a simple procedure, creating what we believe is the most transparent automated-voting process available in the world.
6.) Flexibility. Our electorate has its own laws and conventions for tallying votes. That’s why SAES has been designed to make configuration for different tallying methods easy. Whether we use D’Hondt, simple majority, relative majority or other counting methods, you won’t incur costly reprogramming fees.
7.) Accessibility. Voters with disabilities can be accommodated comfortably by SAES voting machines. Buttons with specific shapes and colors, sip-and-puff devices and special earphones are just some of the features our machines possess in order to guarantee equality and independence for all voters.
8.) Versatility. Smartmatic recognizes the value of innovations that contribute to security so we engineered SAES in a way that lets it integrate readily with civil registration and voter identification systems. SAES makes it easier to build on the security platform you already have in place.
9.) Autonomy .In those cases where an electoral agency requires operational control, Smartmatic provides licensing solutions. Structured as a turnkey agreement with ongoing support, the technology transfer can be achieved in the mid- to long- term, after training has been completed. http://www.smartmatic.com/solutions/automated-election-system/single-view/article/the-new-standard-of-modern-democracy/

All the nine features of Smartmatic Auditable Election System (SAES) ensure a credible modulation of power and have clean, honest and orderly 2010 Philippine elections. With this automated election irregularities such as vote-buying, cheating in the counting of votes, flying voters and harassment of voters that happen last few national election campaign periods will be avoided.

In fact, the country’s first trial of automated elections, which took place in the August 2008 elections for officials of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), was very successful from the voters’ points of view, according to a post-election survey in ARMM by Social Weather Stations (SWS). http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20090314-194090/ARMM-voters-liked-their-automated-elections

"Setting up the country's automated electoral system is a crucial step toward clean and honest elections. While it will not be a cure-all for the country's electoral problems, automating the polls will eliminate a lot of the human intervention that has made vote-rigging possible." said Angara who authored the automated election law.

"The heart of a true democracy lies in achieving clean and honest elections which provide mandate and authority to elect public officials. Our laws mandate the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to use an automated election system in the conduct of national and local elections to encourage transparency, credibility, fairness and accuracy of elections," said Angara.http://www.senate.gov.ph/press_release/2009/0702_angara1.asp

Therefore being an Information Technology student and a citizen in our country our main concern is to have an honest and clean election this coming 2010. This automated election ensure us the security of our votes that will facilitate a fair and honest elections and provides us an unquestionable new set of government leaders that will unite the country in facing the challenges ahead of us.

The advantages of their Human Resource management in the company are they trained their employee properly. Aside from the advantages there are also disadvantages, after they finished the training inside the company. They apply to the other company instead of staying in Ansuico because when they apply to the other company and found out that they came from Ansuico company and finished their training there, there's a high possibility that they qualify to the job they apply to that company.

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organization that focuses on recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the organization. Human Resource Management can also be performed by line managers.

Daily Backup. There database provides a copy of computer data that is stored, e.g. a copy stored on a floppy disk, compact disk or any writable materials. In case of brownout, the company has supported data.

Kept the Data Controlled. Kept the data in check and not expressed fully or at all.

The Risk of IT/IS Changes

The company is using an In-house Develop System. It is an In-house Develop System because the company implements and designs there own system. In the development stage the company uses a Visual FoxPro as their front end and SQL 6.5, SQL 7.0 and turns to SQL 2000. They use it for management monitoring system through this the company can know the transaction in any store aside from two stores in Mangagoy because of the problem in internet connection. The two stores in Mangagoy have their own database and they have to submit it to the main branch for evaluation if that branch is improving or not. The database will automatically update every five minutes by the access of the internet. The maintenance of the database is through their programmer and system analyst. They also develop some feature in their database to make it easy and more precise to the users. The advantages of the database they are using are it is fast, more accurate and cost. The company saves money and time. Aside from the advantages there are also disadvantages in the database they use. If the personnel is no enough training and knowledge about the system he is currently using. The company is not ready for the Disaster Recovery System. The company suffer system failure that affects all transaction currently in progress but do not physically damage the database.

Therefore, the development and management of information technology tools assists executives and the general workforce in performing any tasks related to the processing of information. Managing ones system is indeed a hard thing to do. Management Information System (MIS) and business systems are especially useful in the collation of business data and the production of reports to be used as tools for decision making.
